Most give a small monetary offering as they bow (although this is not required). You’ll also see that Sikhs walk up and bow (fully prostrate on the floor) in front of the scripture out of respect for its teachings. When you enter the main hall of the gurdwara where the service is held, you will see the Sri Guru Granth Sahib (the Sikh holy scripture, revered as a living “guru” or teacher) set up at the far end. (Definitely save your fancy party dresses for the evening reception!)

(Dressy business casual is fine.) Ladies should feel free to wear pants, as everyone will be sitting on the floor. People normally sit “Indian-style” or with their legs tucked under them. (Steve will be wearing one, as will family and many friends.)Įveryone must sit on the floor during the service. Of course, if you’d like to wear a turban, let me know I can arrange for it. (Note that people do not generally wear Western-style hats.) Please bring a scarf or bandanna to cover your head. Otherwise, woman drape scarves over their heads and men tie bandannas or kerchiefs on their heads. Many Sikhs wear turbans (an article of faith) so their heads are already covered. At the entrance of GNFA there is a small vestibule with cubbies in which people place their shoes. You will need to remove your shoes before entering the gurdwara. Please know that for all Sikh religious functions: The anand karaj occurs as part of a regular Sikh religious service.
I therefore want to share some information so that you know what to expect.įirst, note that our anand karaj will take place in a gurdwara (Sikh house of worship), specifically Guru Nanak Foundation of America (“GNFA”) in Silver Spring, MD. Note that the Sikh wedding ceremony is different than a Hindu wedding ceremony.
I know that many of you have never attended an anand karaj (literally “ceremony of bliss,” the Sikh wedding ceremony). Both Steve and I are very happy that you will be sharing in our wedding festivities! I am very excited for the big day, and hope that it will be a fun and memorable event for everyone.
